I'm not trying to say i'm on a level with a jiu jitsu guy. But, I have spent 10 plus years in a dojo and I have a black belt. I worked really hard for it. The number 1 benefit I earned from it is that I have learned not to fight. I have to navigate in all manner of areas in my town, from the rich part, to the ghetto. I can walk with my head up, be respectful, and I fear no one. I find that giving respect goe's a long long way. However, i'm always switched on in areas that feel dangerous and I try to get in and out quick. Even when I have had an aggressor talking smack and posturing, I play a different game in my head. Many time's I have had someone glare at me, and look quickly away from me when they catch how serene and at peace I am. Martial arts are not for fighting, they are for NOT fighting. counter intuitive I know, but that's how it is.
